Most attribution data floating around the internet is either three years old, pulled from a vendor with a product to sell, or aggregated across industries in a way that makes it almost useless for B2B SaaS. The Attribution Model Nobody Actually Uses Correctly

The specific finding that surprises most revenue leaders: SDR-sourced pipeline, when traced back through earlier touches, shows prior content or event exposure in roughly 70% of deals. That matters because those companies were underfunding content and events based on a last-touch view that made SDRs look like they were generating demand rather than converting it.

LinkedIn paid campaigns show the widest performance variance of any channel in the dataset. Companies with tight ICP definitions and sequential messaging see 2x to 3x better pipeline-to-spend ratios than those running broad awareness plays. The channel works, but only with more intentional setup than most teams invest in it.

The Measurement Gap Nobody Talks About

The most consistent gap across Series A to D companies is not a tool problem or a model problem. It is a definition problem. Fewer than 30% of the companies in this dataset had a shared, documented definition of what constitutes a marketing-influenced opportunity versus a marketing-sourced opportunity. Finance, marketing, and sales were often working from different mental models and no one had forced alignment.

That gap compounds over time. By Series C, when companies start building out revenue operations functions, they often inherit years of inconsistently tagged data that cannot be retroactively cleaned. The attribution dashboards look functional but the underlying data does not support the decisions being made from them.

The second measurement gap is dark social and word-of-mouth. For B2B SaaS companies selling into technical or operationally sophisticated buyers, a substantial portion of initial awareness happens in Slack communities, private forums, peer referrals, and conversations that leave no trackable footprint. The companies that acknowledge this build for it by investing in community presence and NPS-driven referral tracking rather than expecting their attribution platform to capture it. The ones that ignore it end up systematically overvaluing paid channels because those are the ones that show up in the data.

What Forward-Looking Companies Are Actually Doing

The highest-performing companies in this dataset are not chasing a perfect attribution model. They are building what some teams call a "signal stack" rather than a single source of truth. That means combining modeled attribution with pipeline surveys, contribution scoring, and self-reported attribution at the point of conversion. None of those signals is perfect on its own, but together they give revenue leaders a more honest picture than any single model can.

The practical implication: if you are a Series B company and your attribution strategy is still "whatever HubSpot reports by default," you are making budget decisions on data that systematically rewards the last thing a buyer clicked before they were already sold.

The goal is not perfect measurement. The goal is measurement that is honest about what it cannot see.
